What is the 7-Second Rule for checking hot pavement?

Asphalt absorbs heat, making it up to 40°F to 60°F hotter than the air. Always place the back of your bare hand firmly against the pavement or artificial turf for seven seconds. If you can't hold it there comfortably, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Watch out for artificial grass and synthetic turf, which can reach dangerous temperatures of 140°F to 160°F in direct sunlight.

What temperature is safe to walk a dog?

Temperatures between 50°F (10°C) and 70°F (21°C) are generally safe. Between 70°F and 85°F (21-29°C), exercise caution, especially when relative humidity exceeds 70%, which blocks evaporative cooling from panting. Over 85°F (29°C) is dangerous. In cold weather, below 45°F (7°C) requires caution for small or thin-coated breeds, and under 20°F (-7°C) is unsafe without protective gear, particularly in wet or snowy conditions.

What are the signs of heatstroke in dogs?

Dogs pant to regulate body heat. If your dog exhibits excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or unsteadiness, stop immediately. Move to shade, offer water, and wet their paws and belly.
